Turning What Limits You Into What Leads You
The Story of Dr. Saundra Russell-Smith
Dr. Saundra Russell-Smith, founder of Limitless Leaders LLC, is an educator first and foremost, and a leader who leads with a disability. After writing a book about her lived experience as a Black woman who stutters, she began receiving requests for advice, mentorship, and speaking engagements. What started as a personal story evolved into a business with a bold mission: to help leaders turn what limits them into what leads them, particularly for women who have long been underrepresented in the conversation.
Her inspiration came from what she couldn’t find. As an educator, Dr. Russell-Smith searched for role models who stuttered and looked like her… and found none. While more men are publicly known to stutter, she had never met another Black woman who did. That absence revealed a powerful gap. Through Limitless Leaders LLC, she is creating space, representation, and possibility for individuals who stutter.
Her impact continues to grow. She is set to deliver a three-hour professional training for Administrative Assistants — unrelated to stuttering — demonstrating the depth of her expertise beyond her personal narrative. She was also invited to present to the African Connections Stammering Group after being discovered on LinkedIn. As the first Black American woman who stutters to address the group, she delivered a 60-minute presentation that was met with an outpouring of gratitude, especially from women who shared how often they are made to feel invisible.
When Dr. Russell-Smith decided to build a business around her message, she admittedly knew very little about entrepreneurship. A CPA who purchased her book connected her with a graduate of Sunshine Enterprises, who strongly recommended the program. Introduced by Downtown Loop Taxes’s Stephanie Blaklely, she enrolled and quickly realized, “I didn’t even know I needed it.”
Today, as a proud solopreneur, she credits Sunshine Enterprises with helping her understand what to prioritize at this stage of growth and has since referred friends, encouraging others, “If someone tells you to try Sunshine Enterprises, just do it.”
