The Community Sweet Spot
From Liquid Nitrogen to Lasting Connections
Nitro Nostalgia’s ice cream is much more than dessert, bringing together a community that bonds over more than taste buds.. As Chicago’s made-to-order liquid nitrogen ice cream café, the business combines handcrafted treats with a welcoming space where neighbors can gather, connect, and create memories.
The idea began with a simple goal: bring something unique to Chicago. After seeing liquid nitrogen ice cream concepts while visiting Florida, founder Garland Lucas knew he wanted to offer an experience unlike anything else in the city. By freezing each order with liquid nitrogen, Nitro Nostalgia creates a smoother, creamier texture while turning every scoop into an experience. What started as a quest to serve exceptional ice cream eventually evolved into something much larger.
Today, Nitro Nostalgia serves as a true community pillar. Guests can enjoy ice cream, empanadas, and specialty creations while relaxing in a lounge filled with books and board games. Through a partnership with a local literacy program, the café offers books for young readers, creating a space where families can spend time together and children can discover a love of reading.
One of the business’s biggest accomplishments has been simply staying the course. After successfully navigating its first 15 months, including the challenges of Chicago winters, Nitro Nostalgia has become a trusted destination on the South Side, so much so that it’s even hosting teenagers’ first dates, a meaningful reminder of the role the business is beginning to play in people’s lives.
As the business grew, Garland sought guidance through Sunshine Enterprises after being encouraged by a friend who served as a coach in the program. Coming from a career in the railroad industry, he was accustomed to working within organizations where systems and processes were already established. Building those systems from scratch as an entrepreneur required a different skill set, and through Sunshine, he found practical support, valuable connections, and the resources needed to build a stronger foundation for the business.
Today, Nitro Nostalgia employs three year-round team members and expands to as many as ten employees during the busy summer season, when lines often stretch out the door. The café has also become a home for local creativity, hosting open mic nights and welcoming artists, comedians, and performers looking to develop their craft. The goal is to become a launching pad for emerging talent while continuing to serve as a place where the community can gather. Through every scoop served and every opportunity created, Nitro Nostalgia is demonstrating the impact a neighborhood business can have when it puts people first.
